Las Vegas in Winter: Shows, Weather and New Year's Eve
Las Vegas, 美国

At midnight on 31 December, fireworks launch off nine or ten casino rooftops at once. The Strip closes to traffic for it and becomes a four-mile pedestrian pen. December nights drop to 39°F / 4°C.

Shows worth booking first

Sphere (east of the Strip) is the best winter booking in the city. The 366ft matte-black globe turns its whole exterior into one wrapping LED skin after dark, a giant eyeball one hour and a planet the next, with the Venetian towers and the I-15 behind it. The Eagles run from 13 November 2026 to 23 January 2027, Metallica to 13 March 2027, and the Backstreet Boys play 26 December to 2 January. Between the residencies the room screens The Wizard of Oz in 4D.

The Oz screenings start at $100. Residency concerts run $200 to $400 and up. There is no door policy and the seating is large-capacity, with a group sales desk for parties of 10 or more. Buy together and buy early if you want to sit together. On 31 December the exosphere carries the countdown.

Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil, Las Vegas
Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil, Las Vegas

Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil (Mandalay Bay) is the strongest surviving Cirque title for a mixed international group. Acrobats fly on wires over a mirrored stage, the dancers wear sequinned military jackets and single white gloves, and the purpose-built theatre is video from wall to wall. It runs 90 minutes with no language barrier. Shows are Thursday to Monday at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., with dates confirmed through January 2027, and seats cost $100 to $250 by tier. The room seats a coach party together and Cirque's group line handles the rate. Mad Apple closed in September 2026, so ignore older listings that still carry it.

Absinthe at the Spiegeltent (Caesars Palace Roman Plaza) is the sharpest small-room show in town, 15 years in, filthy and brilliant. The tent is round and timber-ribbed with stained-glass panels, pitched among the marble statues, and the audience sits knee-to-knee around a 9ft circular stage. It is 18+ and no place for children or the easily offended. Tickets start at $116, premium ringside $200 to $300. The host picks on the front-row kiss seats, so seat the shy ones further back. The tent stays warm when the Strip wind picks up.

New Year's Eve downtown and above it

Fremont Street Experience (downtown) is the cheapest way to do a proper Las Vegas New Year. Five blocks of the old downtown street sit under a barrel-vaulted LED canopy, with Vegas Vic in neon on the corner and zipliners on SlotZilla flying beneath the screen above the crowd. Three live stages play free most nights. The ticketed Countdown Under The Canopy party is already on sale at $50 to $100 a head, with group tickets sold in blocks, and it buys you the concerts and the fireworks under the canopy. Downtown is far less of a crush.

Legacy Club at Circa Resort & Casino (downtown) is the best paid vantage point for the midnight fireworks. The whole line of rooftop launches lines up in front of you. The 60th-floor terrace is open air, with brass filigree palm trees, gold-leaf detailing and fire pits, the neon directly below and the Strip skyline on the southern horizon. Cocktails are $20 to $25, and the New Year's Eve open-bar packages run into the hundreds. Entry is 21+ with smart dress, and 31 December sells out. Groups go in on a VIP table reservation, either indoors or outside at the fire pits. Book the moment the December press conference confirms the launch sites, and bring a coat.

Views when the air is cold and dry

The STRAT SkyPod (north end of the Strip) gives the clearest views of the year once the air turns cold and dry. The tower is a 1,149ft white concrete needle with a flared pod and a caged outdoor deck, the Big Shot's open-air frame spiking out of the roof, and it is the tallest free-standing observation tower in the US. It opens daily from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and takes walk-ups and groups. Deck entry is $27, and ride add-ons push that to $50 to $60. SkyJump costs more, is booked per person and carries weight limits. Insanity has gone and X-Scream is listed as closed. Check what is actually running before you pay for a rides package.

High Roller at The LINQ (mid-Strip) has 28 spherical glass cabins on a 550ft white-spoked wheel above the open-air LINQ Promenade. The cabins are enclosed and heated. One rotation takes 30 minutes, which is long enough for a group that wants to drink and talk. A cabin is $28 in daytime and $40 anytime. The Happy Half Hour cabin runs $67 to $70 and gives up to 10 people a private pod with its own bartender and an open bar. Those cabins are 21+.

Free on the Strip in December

Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens (the Strip) costs nothing on a Strip where everything else is ticketed. The winter display is installed from 14 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. Under the glass roof sit oversized animatronic holiday figures, polar bears and a 42ft white fir, with fresh-flower sculptures between them. No ticket and no door, 24 hours a day, at any group size. It is shoulder-to-shoulder between Christmas and New Year. Outside the front door the lake's 460ft fountain jets fire every half-hour to midnight, also free.

Light displays beyond the Strip

Enchant Christmas at Las Vegas Ballpark (Summerlin) runs from 20 November to 27 December 2026 and shuts before New Year, so it is a December option only. A walk-through maze of illuminated arches and sculptures fills the outfield, an ice-skating trail curls between them, and wooden artisan-market huts stand around the warning track. Tickets start at $27, with add-ons for skating and parking. Up to 25 people book online, rates are discounted from 10 and private suites take 10 to 25 with their own viewing space. It is built for families and office parties.

Glittering Lights at Las Vegas Motor Speedway opens nightly from 6 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, holidays included, and you never leave your heated car. The three-mile route runs through the speedway infield, tunnels of LED arches closing over the windscreen and animated displays on the banked track apron, more than six million bulbs in all. It is priced per vehicle, so a full car is the cheapest way in. Prepaid entry is $39 per carload and $44 cash at the gate; a season pass is $149. Minibuses and coaches pay a larger-vehicle rate, and the Santa Tram is sold separately. The speedway is 10 miles north of the Strip, so you need a hire car or a driver.

Ethel M Chocolates Botanical Cactus Garden (Henderson) is 20 minutes out of town and the 33rd annual run goes from 5 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Three acres of mature saguaro, agave and barrel cacti are individually wrapped in coloured lights against a black desert sky, with the chocolate-factory windows glowing at the edge of the garden. Entry is $3 a head, free on opening night, and free for under-2s and over-65s. Half the takings go to local food banks. Walk up, no reservation, any size group.

Indoor rooms for a cold day and a late night

AREA15 (a mile and a half off the Strip) is where to go on a cold day. The building is a windowless black warehouse off the I-15 behind a mirrored-tree portal. Inside, Meow Wolf's Omega Mart lays out fake supermarket aisles of invented products with hidden doors behind the shelves, and the 200ft Eye Dropper drop tower runs up through the place. District entry is free. Omega Mart is $55 and gained its Phenomenomaly live-performance layer in 2026, and other attractions are $20 to $45 each. Zone 2 has added the Museum of Ice Cream, Interstellar Arc and The Escape Game. The district books groups and private events direct.

Zouk Nightclub (Resorts World) opens Thursday to Saturday from 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. The room is multi-level, built around a suspended Mothership LED rig that drops over the dancefloor, a painted dragon filling the back wall and kinetic lighting trusses overhead. You walk hotel to lift to club indoors the whole way, which is why this is the December room for a big night. Cover is $40 to $75 and bottle-service tables start at $1,000. Entry is 21+ with a strict dress code. A table is the only way a group of eight gets through the door together on a holiday weekend. The 2026 resident list includes James Hype and Lil Wayne.

The Neon Museum at night

The Neon Museum, Las Vegas

The Neon Museum opens nightly from 6 to 11 p.m., with the Brilliant! Jackpot projection show as an add-on. The Boneyard is an outdoor gravel yard of salvaged casino signage, the Stardust script and the giant Moulin Rouge letters, a Hard Rock guitar and Aladdin's lamp, and the swooping white shell of the old La Concha motel lobby is the visitor centre. Mild winter days are the best time of year to walk it, and you should dress for the cold after dark. Entry is $35 for adults in the evening and $17.50 for children aged 7 to 17, sold by timed slot with a group booking option. Weekend evening slots sell out, so book ahead.

Snow and sandstone outside the city

Lee Canyon (Spring Mountains) is targeting 20 November 2026 for opening, with a new West Bowl chairlift and five new trails. Lifts run up white slopes at around 9,000ft between snow-loaded ponderosa pines and bare limestone ridges, the brown desert basin visible far below. It sits 45 minutes from the Strip, so you can ski and be on a casino floor the same day, which no other city offers. Day lift tickets are $80 to $120, with rentals and tubing extra. Book lessons and the tubing hill in advance and arrive early. The single access road and car park fill on powder weekends.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area opens 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November to February, when highs sit near 58°F / 14°C. Winter is the only sane season out here. A 13-mile one-way loop road runs under banded red-and-cream Calico sandstone cliffs, with Joshua trees and creosote in the foreground and snow dusting Mount Charleston on the skyline behind. Entry is $20 per vehicle plus a $2 reservation fee. Timed-entry reservations on Recreation.gov are mandatory from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between 1 October and 31 May, and every vehicle in a group convoy needs its own slot. Re-entry needs a fresh reservation. Arriving before 8 a.m. skips the requirement.

Before you book

Lock in Sphere, Absinthe and an evening Neon Museum slot before you fly, and treat the Countdown Under The Canopy ticket and a Legacy Club table as holiday-weekend sellouts. Enchant shuts on 27 December, Glittering Lights needs a car or a driver, and Red Rock runs on a timed-entry slot per vehicle.
