Riding the Lake Mead desert trails out of Las Vegas

Riding the Lake Mead desert trails out of Las Vegas

Where the ATV convoys out of Las Vegas ride, what a seat costs, and the age and party rules that decide which operator you can book.

Nearly every ATV tour sold in Las Vegas runs at Nellis Dunes OHV Recreation Area, 20 minutes from the Strip and 10,000 acres wide. Entry is free, the gate never closes, and there is no shade, no water and no toilet out there. Off-road vehicles are banned inside Valley of Fire State Park, so the striped red sandstone that riders drive north for gets ridden on the public land next door.

What the ground looks like

Nellis Dunes is rolling pale-gold sand cut by eroded clay badlands, tyre-scarred bowls and rock ledges. Sunrise Mountain stands to the south with the valley haze behind it. Every commercial dune tour in the city stages here, and the land is unrestricted, so any size of party can ride.

Eldorado Canyon, south of Nelson, is a single ochre trail winding between dark volcanic canyon walls. The Colorado River shows in a notch. Rusted 1930s trucks and tin-roofed mining shacks stand in the staging yard.

Logandale Trails (BLM land north of Valley of Fire) is deep red and cream Aztec sandstone, fins and slickrock bowls with sandy washes running between striped walls under wide sky. More than 200 miles of trail cross it, from graded beginner roads to rock-crawling lines. Guided convoys come up from Las Vegas and the staging areas hold large parties. Check BLM access notices before you drive, because OHV closures have been proposed.

The operators and the ground each one rides

Awesome Adventures (Eldorado Canyon, south of Nelson) guides convoys on its own private trails. No permit lottery applies and no public-land dust blows back down the line. The fleet runs from two-seat to six-seat RZRs, and you will spend most of the morning following a dust plume behind a red four-wheeler. Hotel pickup covers Excalibur, Resorts World, Horseshoe and Golden Nugget for parties of one to five. Riders aged 16 and 17 may drive an ATV, and an RZR driver must be 18. That rule splits some family groups. Price band $$$.

Above All Las Vegas ATV Tours & Watercraft Rentals (661 W Lake Mead Parkway) sits on the Lake Mead corridor itself, a low depot with quads lined up on trailers under a corrugated sun canopy, the Black Mountain ridgeline behind and lake haze on the horizon. It covers the widest spread of terrain here, canyon, red rock and alpine. The Eldorado Canyon tour needs two riders and the Valley of Fire tour four. The Mt Charleston run needs six riders, so a solo booking usually fails. Custom packages are quoted on request. $$$.

Las Vegas Outdoor Adventures (Polaris Avenue) stages on 30 private acres ringed by bare desert mountains, with rows of Honda, Polaris and Can-Am quads on pale gravel and riders pulling on goggles and neck gaiters. Its Lake Mead and Colorado River ride is the longest on the market at three hours in the saddle. ATV and shooting-range packages are sold together, and the Nellis Dunes runs include Strip VIP transport. The same yard and phone line trade under several brand names. Compare quotes before you book. $$$.

SunBuggy Fun Rentals Las Vegas (6925 Speedway Blvd) is the easiest base to reach and the most forgiving for a first-timer, with beginner instruction and a hotel shuttle. The machines are roll-caged tube-frame buggies and quads on open tan sand beside the Speedway, throwing rooster-tails of pale dust with the valley skyline flat on the horizon. It rides the dunes and the Logandale system. Lake Mead is not on its routes. Chase-style group formats keep mixed-ability parties together. $$$.

Permits, fees and the park map

Every machine at Nellis Dunes must be registered under Nevada OHV law. Valley of Fire charges $15 per out-of-state vehicle for day use, with no reservation and no timed entry, and coaches enter on the same terms.

Lake Mead Visitor Center (10 Lakeshore Road) is a low mid-century desert-modern NPS building with a cactus garden out front, a relief map of the lake inside and Boulder Basin below the windows. Pick up the current backcountry road map at the ranger desk and confirm which numbered routes are open before you drive any of them. It opens 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily and closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. You walk in without booking. The exhibit floor is small, and tour coaches still stop.

Booking ahead

Guided tours run seven days a week. The main ATV tour is flagged as likely to sell out, and seats start at $105 per person. Reserve before you fly, and name the machine type you want while you are doing it.

Hoover Dam and the Historic Railroad Trail

Hoover Dam (Black Canyon) is the structure that made Lake Mead exist, a 730-foot curved concrete wall wedged into the canyon with Art Deco intake towers rising out of green water. The pale bathtub ring of mineral stain sits high on the rock, and the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman bridge arcs overhead. The crest walk is free. The Visitor Center is $15 and the Powerplant Tour is $25 to $30. The deeper Guided Dam Tour is sold on site on the day, first-come, and cannot be held for a party. Arrive before 10 a.m., because the last tour tickets go at 4:15 p.m.

Hoover Dam, Las Vegas

Historic Railroad Trail runs 3.7 miles one way along a flat gravel rail bed above Boulder Basin, through five timber-framed tunnel mouths, each 25 feet wide and 300 feet long. The bores are dark and cool, and each one frames bright blue water at the far end. This is the bed that carried Hoover Dam's materials. The trail is free and unticketed, the graded surface is wheelchair-accessible, and it is wide enough to walk a group abreast. More than $833,000 of drainage and surfacing work began in 2026. Expect intermittent works.

Redstone Dune Trail and Techatticup Mine

Redstone Dune Trail (Mile 27, Northshore Road) is a half-mile loop through burnt-orange Aztec sandstone, 140-million-year-old petrified dunes with crossbedded swirls, wind-hollowed pockets and narrow slots between rounded boulders. Grey limestone mountains stand behind them. Shaded picnic tables and restrooms sit at the trailhead, which makes it the stop to take after hours on a quad.

Redstone Dune Trail, Las Vegas

Techatticup Mine & Nelson Ghost Town holds 1861 timber mine buildings and corrugated-iron sheds in a narrow canyon, with rusted vintage cars and a crashed light aircraft staged among the scrub and a timbered adit going into the hillside. It is Nevada's oldest gold mine. Tours run at 9 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. by reservation and cost $20 an adult for just over an hour underground. The tour only goes ahead with four or more adults, so small parties can be turned away. Book on 702-291-0026.

Hemenway Harbor and the falling water line

Lake Mead Cruises (Hemenway Harbor) sails the Desert Princess, a three-deck white paddlewheeler with a red stern wheel and the only large vessel on the lake. It is the one way to see the dam from the water, with sheer desert cliffs on either side and the wall filling the view ahead. Decks are enclosed and climate-controlled, with an open upper deck above. Group reservations are taken. The harbour is 45 minutes from the Strip. The operator marked 35 years on Lake Mead in October 2026. $$.

Las Vegas Boat Harbor & Harbor House Café (Hemenway Harbor) is a floating timber-decked café and bar moored on pontoons, striped awnings over the patio, boat slips radiating out and bare tan hills dropping straight to the waterline. It serves from breakfast through dinner, the covered patio handles groups, and you walk in. This is the closest cold drink to the dusty end of a ride. $$.

Callville Bay Resort & Marina is where you can see how far the lake has dropped. It hit 1,040 feet in August 2026, its lowest since it first filled almost 90 years ago. The floating docks and houseboats have moved down a widening band of bleached shoreline again and again, with Mobi-Mat launch tracks laid over raw mud and gravel and a white mineral line on the hills above. A shuttle runs between the car park and the water. Houseboat and motorised parties book in here. $$.

Breakfast before a dawn start

The Coffee Cup Café (Nevada Highway) opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m. daily. Those hours fit a dawn pickup and rule the place out for an afternoon tour. It has been family-run since 1994. I ordered the huevos rancheros, the plate was vast, and it is what I would order again before three hours of dust. Signed celebrity photographs hang beside a hand-painted mural wall. They are not the reason to come. It is walk-in only and compact, fine for a handful of riders and awkward for a coach party. Go early.

The Coffee Cup Café, Las Vegas

Is it worth it

It suits a rider who wants ground a hire car cannot reach and who can give up most of a day. The riding is dusty and unshaded, and the age limits and party minimums decide which operator you can actually use.

Best time to go

Logandale is effectively a winter venue. Avoid June to August there. The Valley of Fire west entrance is closed Monday to Thursday through 2026, and the whole park shuts from 1 to 14 December 2026. Put the riding at the start of the day and the water at the end of it.

Booking and closures before you drive out

Reserve the ATV tour and the mine tour in advance, and check the Valley of Fire dates against the day you plan to drive north. See the Las Vegas guide and the Las Vegas hotel search.

FAQs

Can you ride an ATV inside Lake Mead National Recreation Area?

Guided convoys ride the Lake Mead and Colorado River corridor, and the longest of those rides is three hours in the saddle, staged from the Polaris Avenue yard. Off-road vehicles are banned inside Valley of Fire State Park, so the red-rock riding happens at Logandale Trails next door. Confirm which numbered backcountry routes are open at the Lake Mead Visitor Center on 10 Lakeshore Road before you drive any of them.

What does an ATV tour near Lake Mead cost?

Seats start at $105 per person. Nellis Dunes OHV Recreation Area is free to enter and open 24 hours a day if you bring your own machine, which must be registered under Nevada OHV law.

How far ahead should I book?

Tours run seven days a week, and the main ATV tour is listed as likely to sell out, so reserve before you arrive. The Techatticup Mine tour also needs a reservation on 702-291-0026, and it runs only with four or more adults.

How old do you have to be to drive?

With Awesome Adventures in Eldorado Canyon, riders aged 16 and 17 may drive an ATV, and an RZR driver must be 18. Check that against your party before you choose the machine.

Can one person book a tour?

Above All Las Vegas on 661 W Lake Mead Parkway sets minimums of two riders for Eldorado Canyon, four for Valley of Fire and six for Mt Charleston, so a solo booking usually fails.
